TURBO joined forces with neighbors in the 12 South Neighborhood to bring traffic calming techniques from the Belmont-Hillsboro traffic circle! This circle, located at the intersection of 11th and Gilmore Avenue, is the third installation of its kind near 12th Ave S.

As the commercial area of 12 South continues to grow with popular coffee shops, restaurants, retail stores, and more, the neighbors surrounding the corridor have experienced an increased amount of speeding vehicles to get onto and off of 12th Ave. South. This led to the original design of a traffic circle to ensure cars drive the proper speed on the neighborhood streets.

10th Ave S Traffic Calming

NEw Cycle Track

June 2018

Metro Public Works installed cycle tracks on 10th Ave S, from Acklen Ave to Kirkwood Ave. The decision was made to forgo the the traffic circle at 10th and Lawrence Ave in their striping plan. However, Public Works considered the results of the pop-up installation which ultimately informed the final design.

The new on-street infrastructure narrowed the existing automobile lanes and added protected lanes for cyclists for the majority of this stretch. New bus infrastructure was implemented, including a boarding island that allows bus riders to board curbside without blocking bike lanes. Part of the Walk N Bike Plan, this section will connect to new cycle infrastructure on 12th Ave N.

TURBO replicated the pop-up traffic circle project that was installed on 15th Ave and Elmwood at this busier intersection in a nearby neighborhood to see how this strategy could calm speeding traffic on 10th Ave.
